Washington, New Jersey, March 1999 - drpaula.com, already the largest pediatric website in the world with over 10,000 pages, is on the brink of growth - thanks to the overwhelming response by information-seeking parents across the U.S., and an increasing amount from visitors from other countries

"In my private practice in Manhattan, I can only connect with a limited number of patients," says Dr. Paula Elbirt (or Dr. Paula, as she's affectionately known by the children and caregivers who's lives she touches every day), originator of the site. "I always dreamed of a way to reach out to more people in a more interactive manner. The Internet has provided me with the opportunity."

Only less than two years old, drpaula.com boasts over one million visitors to date. The site offers child care advice and resources on almost every topic imaginable, at every age, and for wherever children may be - whether at home, camp, school, or traveling around with the family. Dr. Paula herself spends countless number of evenings answering questions from thousands of parents from different time zones, mostly across the U.S.

Dr. Paula stresses, however, that each child is unique, and she can't provide actual medical advice or diagnosis via the website.

Amazingly, drpaula.com has been built by private funding from Dr. Paula and her husband, Harold Engel - who manages the site from his farm. "To take the site into the next millennium, we are now discussing sponsorships and advertising support from reputable organizations," says Engel. "Within six months we plan to host a live chat mediated by a pediatrician three days per week, as well as offering more references to pediatricians around the world."

An African doctor recently e-mailed Dr. Paula to let her know his pediatric hospital ward will soon get running water! Imagine him having tried to meet someone like Dr. Paula without the power of the Internet as a medium. It wasn't too long ago when that was the case, and obviously - the communication didn't happen.
