Lighten Up

By Laura Bridges

Q. I've been having trouble staying on my diet and was told that I should not expect to be successful until I get my lack of sleep problem taken care of. Do you agree?

A. You will need to make some significant changes in your lifestyle if you go out in high heels and find they've turned into flip-flops on your return. Don't let anyone discourage you from taking better care of yourself. Anyone can lose weight if they reduce their daily calorie intake and step up their exercise. Exercise can cause you to sleep better. You should exercise to make yourself more physically tired which in turn will improve your rest, and then your food choices will improve. (You won't have to spend as much money on shoes any more. Bonus!)

Q. Are there any foods I should avoid in order to sleep better and lose weight at the same time?

A. Are you really sure that you need to lose weight? I knew it when I sat on a rainbow and Skittles popped out of me. If this is you, I recommend the following guidelines: Get off all speed, legal or street. Do not use alcohol to help you fall asleep. Although alcohol may initially induce sleep, once it wears off, the sleep tends to be fragmented. Limit caffeine during the 4 to 6 hours before bedtime. Approximately 50% of the caffeine consumed at 7 PM remains in the body at 11 PM. Limit liquids of any kind for at least 90 minutes before bedtime if the need to urinate wakes you up in the middle of the night. (If you don't wake up it's even worse.) It takes about 90 minutes for the body to process liquids.

Q. I have sleep apnea and my doctor said I should lose weight. Do you know how this disorder is related to obesity?

A. I do know that when I was told I was so big the only thing keeping me from going into Jenny Craig was the door; I had to make some changes. And when I decided to go swimming to lose weight in the ocean and the whales started singing 'We are family', I knew I had a problem. Snoring and sleep apnea are worsened by obesity because an excess of fatty tissue in the throat area can partially block the airways. How attractive is that? Sure, the wedding vows say we should stay with our spouse through sickness and health, but come on! In snoring, this fatty tissue vibrates as the sleeper breathes, causing an irritating noise. This fatty tissue momentarily blocks the air passage completely, causing the sleeper to stop breathing for a short time. Then the person has to gasp to start breathing again, putting a strain on the entire body, and especially the heart. Persons with sleep apnea usually snore, and awaken almost 200 times a night. Your love life will be all washed up and you will never get the deep and restful sleep that refreshes. You could even be awakened with a pillow smashing your face placed there by your distraught spouse. The relationship between obesity and sleep apnea is well known. In fact, weight reduction should be one of the primary aims when treatment is started. Even the loss of a few pounds may be enough to help alleviate much of the problem.

Laura Bridges won the battle of the bulge and successfully recovered from an eating disorder. Her mission is to help people reach their weight goals sensibly and love their body throughout the entire process. She can be reached at 916-444-1157.
