Dear Linda: An Adoptive Father's Open Letter to the Birthmother of his Child
By Anonymous

"Ten years ago, I became the adoptive father of a beautiful baby girl," says the author of DEAR LINDA: AN ADOPTIVE FATHER'S OPEN LETTER TO THE BIRTHMOTHER OF HIS CHILD. "The joy of nurturing my daughter to the brink of her teenage years has been the most fulfilling time of my life. She has given me the noblest title of all. I am a father."

DEAR LINDA is more than simply an open letter to the birthmother of his child. It is an open letter to all birthmothers from an adoptive father's perspective. Not only does it express profound thanks for a mature and heart-wrenching decision, but it expresses love.

During the past decade, the author's thoughts often returned to the memory of a meeting with a young, pregnant girl - a girl whose ultimate, loving decision changed the course of his life. "I wonder if her thoughts reach across the distance to reflect upon her child and me. Is she emotionally troubled? Is she at ease with her decision? Will knowing that her child is in a loving and stimulating environment comfort her?"

DEAR LINDA details the events of the past 11 years. Many times emotional, and often humorous, the reader is taken from the tribulations of a couple's infertility to the rigors of the adoption process. Later, the life of a special young girl is chronicled. "This revealing glimpse of my daughter's life will erase any lingering doubts the birthmother may harbor about her decision," says the author.

It's easy to see that a selfless, loving act has positively impacted not only a child and a couple, but also an extended family. The birthmother will see that she has touched the lives of several people in ways she couldn't have initially imagined.

While the author realizes it is unusual to remain anonymous, the sensitive nature of the subject matter requires that he do so. He says, "I wish to guard my family's privacy. An author's potential of public recognition must be secondary to the messages of comfort, appreciation and love directed toward the birthmother."
