The New Dating Game

By The Intelligence Factory

Forty-nine minutes, seven dates--or incredibly abbreviated facsimiles thereof--is the shtick behind SpeedDating, a social exercise designed to pair off Jewish singles in as little time as possible. During each round of the musical chairs-like event, attendees hold rapid-fire interviews with members of the opposite sex; when the seven minutes are up, both circle a "yes" or "no" answer to two key questions: "Was this person polite and friendly?" and the jackpot question, "Would I like to date this person?" At the end of the evening, the participants hand in their cards and if two people agree to date, they are given each other's contact information within the next 48 hours. SpeedDating originated a year and a half ago in Los Angeles, and has since spread to 19 cities, including New York and Kiev, Ukraine.
Getting Jewish singles together--at whatever pace--is a pressing concern for some religious leaders, who worry that the faith is being threatened by intermarriage and assimilation.
